KELOWNA - A large fire destroyed about half of a woodworking building in Kelowna yesterday.
At approximately 7:38 p.m. Kelowna Fire Dispatch received multiple 911 call reporting a large structure on fire at 688 Webster Road, the Heartland Millworks location.
First arriving crews reported a large single-story structure with heavy flames and smoke coming from half of the building.
Initial attacks were made from the exterior of the structure, defensive attack. Crews quickly knocked down the fire and were able to save half the structure and its contents.
No occupants were in the structure at the time of the fire.
Approximately 150 gallons of assorted acetone, paint thinners and lacquers where in or near the building during the fire, causing major concern.
On scene were 18 personnel with four engines a rescue unit, and a command unit.
EHS, RCMP, and Fortis all where on scene.
Half the structure sustained major damage but the flames did not reach most of the heavy machinery inside.
Fire appears to have started in the staining and finishing area of the building.
Kelowna Fire Investigators are on scene this morning to find the cause.
