Fire damages Kelowna highrise

FILE PHOTO

The Kelowna Fire Department battled a blaze this morning that started in a downtown highrise.

Shortly after 3:00 a.m., May 29, firefighters responded to an alarm in a highrise apartment building in the 1400 block of St. Paul St. The first arriving crew was directed to the ninth floor by the alarm panel, said Scott Clarke, platoon captain, in a press release.

The firefighter reported smoke on the ninth floor and found a fire in one of the units. The fire was contained to the apartment but water from a sprinkler head and firefighting efforts affected multiple units on and below the apartment.

No was home at the time of the blaze and all the building's residents were safely evacuated.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental but will be investigated by the Kelowna Fire Department today, Clarke said.

The fire department responded with three engines, a ladder truck, one rescue unit, a safety unit and a command vehicle including 16 fire personnel. RCMP, the B.C. Ambulance Service and FortisB.C. were on scene to assist as well.
