Filming is underway in Merritt for the ABC television medical drama The Good Doctor set at a fictional San Jose hospital.

Film crews will be working at Hamilton Hill and near the Merritt Airport today, May 3 through to May 5.

"(The Nicola Valley) is such a diverse landscape, and we have a variety of films looking at this area," William George, City of Merritt communication, tourism and economic development manager, said. "The film production economy plays an important role towards our local restaurants and hotels. It's great to have them here."

Film production in the Nicola Valley is supported by the Thompson-Nicola Film Commission. It offers a location map to prospective production companies to find environments best suited for their productions.

While George could not provide specifics on which local Merritt companies may be involved in working on the production, he said locals will often be included as extras, and local companies may receive contracts for road maintenance, traffic work and film props, depending on the production.

While crews are in Merritt, local road closures can be seen here on the City website.

George also said the public should be aware of increased traffic while production continues.
