Lake Country gets its name on new federal riding

FILE PHOTO - A federal election polling station is pictured in Vernon, Monday, Oct. 21, 2019.

Adding a new federal riding in the Southern Interior means all boundaries have to be adjusted.

During that process, Lake Country was dropped from the title of all the new ridings in its area by the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission.

In its February report, the Commission put a new riding in the Central Okanagan and named it Kelowna. Lake Country was put in the new Vernon-Monashee riding.

Since 2004 there has been a Kelowna-Lake Country riding.

“I want to thank the Commission for taking into consideration an objection I brought forward on behalf of the residents of the District of Lake Country to ensure their municipality is reflected in the name of the new federal constituency that Lake Country will be a part of,” Gray said in a press release issued today, July 20. “The new Vernon-Lake Country-Monashee name is better reflective of the communities within it.”

The latest Commission report, dated July 19, noted that Gray had requested the change and agreed to do so.

The electoral boundary changes are expected to come into effect before the next federal election. That’s scheduled for Oct. 25, 2025, but since there is a minority government in Ottawa it could happen earlier.
