Source: Redblacks hire Calgary defensive co-ordinator Campbell as head coach

December 05, 2013 - 10:46 AM

The Ottawa Redblacks are looking at the architect of the CFL's most aggressive defence as their first-ever head coach.

According to a CFL source requesting anonymity, the Redblacks have settled upon Calgary Stampeders defensive co-ordinator Rick Campbell as their inaugural head coach.

The announcement will be made official Friday morning at a news conference.

Ottawa is scheduled to return to the CFL in 2014.

Campbell is a 15-year CFL coaching veteran but the Ottawa appointment would be his first as a head coach.

The son of legendary Edmonton Eskimos head coach and executive Hugh Campbell, Rick Campbell has spent three seasons on Calgary's coaching staff, the last two as the club's defensive co-ordinator.

Last season, Calgary posted a CFL-best 63 sacks en route to posting a league-best 14-4 record.

Campbell had been mentioned as a leading candidate for Edmonton's head-coaching job, which ultimately went to Toronto Argonauts defensive co-ordinator Chris Jones.
