The Coquihalla Highway is closed this morning due to a fiery crash involving two semi trucks that left one person dead.
The incident was reported this morning, Aug. 29, between Exit 286 and Exit 276, between Merritt and Hope. The RCMP responded to the scene at roughly 6 a.m., said Cpl. Mike Halskov, with B.C. Highway Patrol.
Images of the scene shows a semi-truck on fire and emergency responders on scene.
The accident occurred when one semi-truck rear-ended another one that had broken down on the highway, Halskov said. One person died in the crash and the other is in serious condition.
An assessment is in progress and a detour is in effect via Highway 5A to Highway 3 through Princeton.
"Northbound traffic will be stopped intermittently," according to DriveB.C.
DriveB.C. is expected to have an update on the highway's status at 11 a.m. this morning but Halskov said the closure will be lengthy due to the nature of the crash.
