An Alberta driver is dead after allegedly driving head-on into a commercial tractor trailer Monday night — it was the second time the driver had veered into oncoming traffic in under a kilometre, say police.

Revelstoke RCMP was dispatched at 7:40 p.m. Jan. 20 to the fatal two vehicle crash approximately 35 kilometres east of Revelstoke on the Trans-Canada Highway. The collision involved a commercial vehicle and a passenger truck.

"BC Ambulance Service, Revelstoke Fire Rescue Service and the Revelstoke RCMP arrived on scene and located an eastbound commercial tractor trailer and westbound pickup truck,"  Staff Sergeant Kurt Grabinsky said in a press release.

"The driver of the passenger truck was dead at the scene."

The driver of the commercial vehicles sustained serious neck and back injuries and transported to the Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke.

The Trans Canada East Traffic Services unit of the RCMP arrived on scene along with the RCMP Traffic Analyst.

"Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that the passenger truck had struck another tractor trailer vehicle approximately one kilometre earlier, and then went head-on into the second tractor-trailer," Grabinsky said.

"Alcohol may have been a factor."

Other vehicle drivers that happened along the collision scene attempted to offer first aid. The deceased driver is from Alberta.

Road conditions were rated as "good winter driving" with temperatures at approximately -5 C with clear roads., and excellent visibility.

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed until the investigation was concluded and the vehicles could be removed from the road by a local towing company. The road was re-opened by approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday Jan. 21.
