A 23-year-old man died following a head-on crash on Highway 97B near Salmon Arm on Wednesday.

Salmon Arm RCMP were informed of a two-vehicle crash just south of Salmon Arm on 10 Avenue at around 7 a.m. on March 13, according to a press release.

When officers arrived they found a Toyota Corolla in the northbound ditch and a newer Ford F-150 on the southbound shoulder. The F-150 was entirely engulfed in flames.

According to witness reports, the Corolla was travelling northbound and swerved into the southbound lane when it crashed into the F-150. The truck reportedly had no time to react.

Driving conditions were poor with a thick fog blanketing the area, the driver of the Corolla was not wearing a seatbelt.

The 49-year-old truck driver was able to get out of the vehicle with assistance before the truck burst into flames and then he was taken to hospital.

The 23-year-old Corolla driver was taken to hospital by BC Ambulance after being resuscitated on the scene, he later died in hospital.

"Salmon Arm RCMP send their condolences to the 23 year-old driver’s family and friends. Police thank all the by-standers, BC Ambulance, Salmon Arm Fire Dept, and Salmon Arm Rescue Unit, for their assistance. This is a grim reminder to drive to conditions, wear your seatbelt, and focus on the road," Const. Andrew Hodges Salmon Arm RCMP said in the release.
