Fairly dry in Okanagan, Kamloops despite torrential downpour on coast

Despite heavy rain from the first atmospheric river of fall all along the BC coast, it didn't penetrate into Kamloops or the Okanagan, which looks to continue to be fairly, but not perfectly, dry through the weekend.

Tofino got 172 mm of rain over the past two days and Port Moody was hit with 97 mm. Only 0.2 mm of rain was recorded in Kamloops over that two-day period.

The heavy rainfall warning has been lifted for the Lower Mainland.

There is a 30% chance of showers in Kamloops this morning, Oct. 19, but no more precipitation predicted in the Environment Canada forecast before Tuesday.

An unseasonably high temperature of 23 Celsius is expected today in Kamloops. The average high for this time of year is about 12 C.

It’s expected to cool in Kamloops in the coming days with a mix of sun and cloud and highs of 14 through the weekend before dropping to single digits next week.

Overnight lows, which are normally around 2 C at this time of year in Kamloops, are forecast at 8 C overnight tonight before dropping to more seasonal levels next week.

In the Okanagan, rainfall over the past two days was heavier in the north and lighter in the south. Vernon got 2.5 mm of rain, Kelowna received 1.8 mm and Penticton only had 0.5 mm.

Highs today increase from north to south in the Okanagan with 18 C forecast for Vernon, rising to 20 C in Penticton.

There's no precipitation in the forecast for the Okanagan with a mix of sun and cloud this week changing to cloudy skies over the weekend. Temperatures are expected to fall to 12 to 13 C on the weekend and it is expected to be cooler next week.

Overnight lows won't get down to seasonal normal levels of 2 C until next week.
