The Kalamalka Rotary Club’s annual charity auction is going ahead despite hackers getting into the club’s social media page.

The Kalamalka Rotary Dream Auction is a fundraising event for charity projects locally and abroad, including scholarships, youth programs, and international humanitarian efforts, according to a press release from the club, Oct. 23.

This year is going to be the 40th Dream Auction, but the club is struggling to promote it since hackers broke into its Facebook page and started posting inappropriate content, including sexual images.

“We are devastated,” chair of the auction Faith Wood said in the release. “The Dream Auction is not only a celebration of 40 years of giving but also a lifeline for the many projects we support. With our Facebook page now compromised, we’re struggling to reach the community and share important information and updates about the event.”

Efforts to contact Facebook and Meta have been unsuccessful, and the social media giants are not giving the club any meaningful response leaving the page in the hands of the hackers.

The club is asking people to spread the word about the Dream Auction, and report the hack through Facebook’s Help Center.

Despite the technical challenges the club is determined to go ahead with the auction.

“We hope the community will come together to help us achieve success at this year’s event,” Wood said.
