The Vancouver Aquarium is selling face masks in order to fundraise to avoid bankruptcy.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the aquarium have teamed up to sell face masks, with net proceeds helping to save the aquarium, according to the aquarium in an emailed statement.

“Washable, breathable and made in Vancouver, our athletic-quality masks are available in four unique designs. And, you'll be helping to ensure that all medical-grade N95 masks are sent to the hospitals and healthcare workers who need them most. Adult masks are available for $19.99 and kid's masks for $17.99, plus tax and shipping,” according to the aquarium.

Last week, the aquarium announced that it might permanently close if it can’t find the funds to cover operating costs.

A statement from the facility says animal care and habitat costs for its 70,000 animals exceeds $1 million a month and revenues have dropped to almost zero since the COVID-19 pandemic forced it to close.

The face masks can be purchased through the Vancouver Aquarium’s online gift shop.

More than 25,000 masks have been sold so far, according to the Whitecaps FC's Twitter page.
