Explosives, possibly grenades, found during North Okanagan traffic stop

RCMP are investigating after explosive devices that looked like hand grenades were found turning a traffic stop in the North Okanagan Monday night.

An officer pulled over a suspicious vehicle on Reservoir Road in Spallumcheen at around 11:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, according to an RCMP media release issued today, Jan. 24.

Because the vehicle had failed to stop for the police in Vernon earlier that day, the driver was taken into custody, RCMP said, and while searching the vehicle several items that resembled hand grenades inside were found.

In consultation with the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit, the area was cordoned off as police waiting for the arrival of the unit from the Lower Mainland.

Members of the explosive disposal unit arrive the next day around noon and police say the "the items were rendered safe."

An analysis confirmed the presence of explosives.

RCMP did not say if the items that were rendered safe were indeed hand grenades.

The driver has been released from custody as police continue their investigation. No word from RCMP if they faces any charges.
