MOSCOW - Local media report six Russian policemen have been wounded in a clash with armed men trying to bring explosives into the capital of Chechnya.

Russian news agencies cited Chechnya's Interior Ministry as saying the clash occurred Monday morning at a police checkpoint on the outskirts of Grozny.

The ministry said the two men were carrying grenades and explosives. It said they were "destroyed," according to the Interfax news agency, but other details were not immediately reported.

The clash took place on Victory Day, when Russia commemorates the anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany with parades and gatherings.

Pro-Moscow Chechen leader Akhmad Kadyrov was killed at a Victory Day celebration in 2004, when a bomb went off under the seats in a Grozny stadium where he was observing ceremonies.
