Poland: Defence ministry under scrutiny over spending

WARSAW, Poland - Poland's prime minister says the defence ministry will explain the substantial amounts of money spent through its government-issued credit and debit cards under the previous minister.

Opposition lawmakers demanded on Friday a detailed list of the charges from the ministry's more than 832 cards, which totalled some 15 million zlotys ($4.4 million) during 2016 and the first half of 2017. Then-Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz was dismissed in January in a larger government reshuffle.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said the sums are substantial and the new defence minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, will research how they compare to the ministry's earlier spending. Blaszczak has cut the number of cards used by ministry employees.

Poland's ruling Law and Justice party says it supports transparency and economic restraint.
