League of Legends to hold esports world championship semifinals in Toronto in 2022

Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena will host the 2022 League of Legends World Championship semifinals.

The esports tournament will feature play-ins in Mexico City, quarterfinals in New York City, semifinals in Toronto and the finals in San Francisco.

While dates have not been set yet, the events are expected to take place in the fall.

It marks the first time a League of Legends World Championship event will be held in Canada. But the North American League of Legends championship sold out the Toronto arena for two days in August 2016.

The 2022 championship schedule announcement was made at a news conference at Chase Center in San Francisco prior to the NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and Toronto Raptors.

The esports championship sees the top teams from 12 regions compete for the title. Held at the end of the regular season, 24 teams from Riot’s 12 professional leagues take part in the month-long tournament.

In November 2021, the 2021 world championship pitted defending champion DWG KIA from the South Korean league (LCK) against Edward Gaming, the top-seeded team from the China league (LPL).

Edward Gaming won the Summoner’s Cup trophy in the best-of-five series with a reported audience of more than four million viewers outside of China.
