Enjoy the above normal warmth in Okanagan, Kamloops before it cools off this weekend

FILE PHOTO - Expect colder weather this weekend.

There may be some precipitation in Kamloops and the Okanagan today but there’s also a good chance the clouds will clear off later in the day, the sun will shine and temperatures could hit 10 Celsius in some locations.

Then a cold front will drop daytime temperatures closer to freezing tomorrow and into the weekend.

“It looks nice today,” Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist told iNFOnews.ca today, Feb. 10. “Let’s hope that cold front stirs up some warm air. It’s kind of counterintuitive but in December, January, February, cold fronts sometimes are the warmest days. It certainly won’t be as warm as it was Monday, but it could be the second warmest day this week."

In general, February has been warmer than average and very dry. The Okanagan snow pack was at 92% of average on Feb. 1 and likely has fallen further, Lundquist said.

Daytime highs will only reach around 2 C or 3 C on the weekend with overnight lows of -4 C to -5 C.

It’s hard to say what’s going to happen weather-wise into next week.

“All we have to do is for this ridge to move 100 kilometres further west and we go from the really warm conditions back to cold, it’s that fine a line,” Lundquist said. “When we’re in a northwest flow, which we’re in right now, the difference between the really warm air and the cold air is just a matter of 100 to 200 km.”

Looking further into the spring is even more difficult.

“A lot of models are suggesting spring will be cooler than usual in the longer range,” Lundquist said. “That is the current outlook but I don’t really trust it right now.”

The forecast for the highways to the Lower Mainland aren’t showing much in the way of precipitation over the next two days. There’s a 30% chance of flurries on the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt early this afternoon and the possibility of fog patches on all the routes.

About 2 centimetres of snow are forecast today for Highway 1 between Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass.

Alpine snow base on regional ski hills:

  • 191 cm – Sun Peaks
  • 155 cm – Silver Star
  • 155 cm – Big White
  • 160 cm – Apex
