The emergency department at Merritt's hospital will be closed for almost 24 hours because of a lack of doctors.

As of 8:30 a.m. today, Jan. 16, the ER at Nicola Valley Hospital was closed, according to an Interior Health media release.

The health authority said "unanticipated limited physician availability" is to blame. Inpatient services will continue as normal at the hospital.

Residents in the Merritt area who need emergency care are directed to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

The emergency department will reopen at 8 a.m. tomorrow. It's normally open 24/7.

Interior Health said people with immediate, life-threatening emergencies should still call 9-1-1 for transport to the nearest facility.
