Small earthquake recorded Sunday off the west coast of Vancouver Island

TOFINO, B.C. - Vancouver Island has been shaken by a small earthquake off the west coast.

The U.S. Geological Service says a 4.7-magnitude quake struck at 9:11 am on Sunday, in the ocean about 124 kilometres northwest of Tofino.

There were no reports of any injuries, or even any immediate suggestion that anyone noticed.

The B.C. government says the province experiences an earthquake every day, but only a small number of them are noticeable and even fewer result in damage.

British Columbia is considered a high-risk zone for earthquakes, given its location on the "Ring of Fire," a 40,000-kilometre horseshoe of seismic activity in the Pacific Ocean.

One of the largest quakes in recent history in the province was a magnitude-7.7 event off the west coast of Haida Gwaii in October 2012 — the second-largest ever recorded in Canada.
