A Vernon apartment building was evacuated Friday morning after a vehicle fire spread.

A City of Vernon media release says several suites at in the building in the 3600 block of 30 Avenue sustained fire, smoke and water damage during the fire that was discovered about 7 a.m., Jan. 3.

Fire crews initially got a report of a vehicle fire in a covered car park at the condo building.

"Upon arrival, firefighters found a single vehicle fully engulfed in flames, with the fire extending to the building above," the City said in the release.

"Crews quickly extinguished the vehicle fire and accessed the suites directly above the car park. As a precaution, the building was evacuated while firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the fire that had spread to three suites."

While firefighters were battling the blaze, residents from the building realized that some of their neighbours were missing.

"Firefighters conducted a thorough sweep of the building and safely assisted two residents out of the structure," the City says.

Residents from the apartments that were damaged have been temporarily displaced and Vernon Emergency Support Services are now assisting them.

There were no reports of injuries and the exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
