Early morning fire in West Kelowna posed significant danger to firefighters

A burning building with a large amount of unknown material inside posed a danger to West Kelowna Fire Rescue as they fought the early morning fire on Colleen Road today, Aug. 28.

The crews were called out shortly after midnight to find an outbuilding “fully involved with fire,” states a fire department news release.

“The fire was quickly knocked down, however crews were challenged with a large amount of debris and stored materials on the property,” the release read. “The fire briefly extended into trees but firefighters were able to keep it away from nearby buildings.

“The fire building posed a significant danger to firefighters due to its compromised structure, unstable basement and unknown contents, so the fire was fought defensively from the outside," the release read.

Four fire engines and 18 firefighters, along with RCMP and other support crews were called out.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
