Dump line ups causing traffic issues

PENTICTON - A late spring that has delayed yard cleanups has helped to create traffic chaos at the regional district’s Campbell Mountain landfill.

The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen encouraged residents to use an alternative landfill in a press release issued yesterday, April 4.

“We are seeing 20 to 30 minute lineups at Campbell Mountain landfill during the week,” RDOS Solid Waste Facilities Coordinator Don Hamilton said.

“Many of the vehicles are bringing small volumes of yard waste. This is blocking traffic along Reservoir Road,” he said.

The regional district is suggesting the alternative landfill at Okanagan Falls, which has no lineups and is only a few minutes’ drive from Penticton.

The Okanagan Falls landfill accepts sorted metal items, electronics, tires, furniture, mattresses and cardboard, but does not take garbage containing food waste.

The Okanagan Falls landfill is located on Allendale Lake Road, which is accessed off McLean Creek Road from Eastside Road. The landfill is open from 10 a.m. to 1.45 p.m. Monday to Saturday.

Curbside collection programs should also be maximized by residents dealing with yard waste.
