Dry April unusual in Okanagan but not so much for Kamloops

Last month was the fourth driest April on record in Kelowna, but an even drier month in Kamloops didn’t rank it in that city’s top 10 for dryness.

Only 2.6 millimetres of rain fell in Kamloops in April, 18% of the normal of 14.2 mm, Environment Canada meteorologist Derek Lee told iNFOnews.ca today, May 2.

“April is kind of a dry month for Kamloops,” he said.

Not so much for Kelowna, where a normal April will bring 29 mm of rain. This year, only 6.6 mm fell, or 23% of normal.

April was also a cool month with Kamloops having a mean temperature of 7.9 Celsius versus a normal mean of 10 C.

Kelowna’s mean was 7.4 C where the average is 9 C.

May is usually a wetter month in both regions, followed by an even wetter June.

“That’s when unstable air masses start settling in,” Lee said. “That’s why you’re seeing all that cloud coming. In June, we call it a cold low month. June is our wettest month for the year in Kelowna and Kamloops.

The forecast for the next couple of days is to reach highs of 20 C in the Okanagan tomorrow and 23 C in Kamloops today and tomorrow, but cooling towards the weekend.

There’s not expected to be enough sunshine to create really hot days but the cloud cover will trap warm air into the valleys at night so lows will only get down to 6 C to 8 C later in the week.

There’s 30% chance of showers this afternoon in the Okanagan and again on Wednesday.

Kamloops has a 40% chance of showers today but only cloud in the forecast for the next few days.

Both areas can expect winds up to 20 km/h today.
