Drunk driver busted in Kamloops RCMP parking lot

KAMLOOPS - As if impaired driving wasn't bad enough, an out-of-town visitor tried to park at the Kamloops RCMP detachment while allegedly under the influence.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release the northern B.C. man has received a 90-day driving prohibition and had his car impounded after allegedly trying to park in the Kamloops RCMP parking lot while under the influence.

Just after midnight on Aug. 18, Shelkie says an officer saw that a man was having troubles trying to park a Ford F-350 pick-up truck behind the detachment. When asked by the officer why he drove into a secure parking lot with visible signs saying it was closed to the public, the driver said he had no idea he had pulled into a police station.

Shelkie says the driver had an over-powering odour of liquor on his breath and showed other signs of impairment, so the officer conducted roadside screening to determine his level of impairment, which showed he was in fact under the influence.

The driver stated he was "just looking for a place to park" so he could make a phone call.

"Kamloops RCMP remind motorists that it is never safe to drink and drive... on roads, highways or in police parking lots," Shelkie says in the release.
