Drug alert for fentanyl-laced substance issued in Kamloops, Merritt

Interior Health has issued a warning about a contaminated drug supply in Kamloops and Merritt.

A teal coloured powder being sold as “down” has been found to contain traces of fentanyl and possible synthetic cannabinoid, according to the health authority’s drug alert, issued Sept. 23.

Risks associated with this substance include: possible overdose, hallucinations, disorientation, cold sweats, fear and panic.

The health authority asks those who know others who have taken the substance to provide a calm approach, decrease the stimulation, if necessary call 9-1-1 and give naloxone.

The health authority recommends users to get their drugs checked at one of the locations found on drugchecking.ca.

It also recommends users to avoid mixing substances, to never use alone or at an overdose prevention site, to start with a small amount, carry naloxone and get the Lifeguard App.

Users can call 2-1-1 for more information.
