Driver awakes to speed off, strike Kamloops RCMP cruiser

Kamloops RCMP woke up a man slumped over in a vehicle Wednesday night, who then collided with a police cruiser as he sped away.

Police were called to check on the man who appeared to be sleeping in a red BMW on the 1800 block of Tranquille Road, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release.

“Although the man seemed cooperative at first, he allegedly turned the car back on and drove it at a high rate of speed, causing a minor collision with an approaching police vehicle before fleeing the area,” Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in the release.

When officers responded around 10:20, March 1, they noticed the BMW had mismatched plates. The news release didn't specify its model. Police also didn't say whether they suspect the BMW was stolen.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian man in his 20s. He had unkempt red hair, facial har and a dark, flat-brimmed hat.

Anyone who witnessed, has information, or video related to this investigation can contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and reference file 2023-7070.
