Driver almost hits Kelowna RCMP officer with pickup

KELOWNA – The driver of a pickup truck nearly struck an RCMP officer while fleeing traffic control at a car crash late last week.

RCMP say at around 2:18 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, officers were conducting traffic control at the scene of a collision on Highway 33 just east of Kelowna when the driver of a burgundy Dodge Ram pickup was seen driving erratically.

An officer directed the pickup to the side of the road and began to approach the window when the driver accelerated quickly and drove away from police, according to an RCMP media release.

A second officer tried to flag down the vehicle, but the driver ignored the warning and almost hit a third officer who was also trying to stop the truck.

“Due to the risk the suspect posed to the public, Kelowna Air Services were engaged and RCMP helicopter Air 4 took to the skies to assist,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says in the release.

The suspect vehicle was found abandoned in a ditch on Como Road near Fisher Road in east Kelowna, police say.

If you witnessed this incident, and have not yet spoken to police, or you have any information that may assist investigators, you are asked to contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300.
