Dreaming of a white Christmas in the Thompson Okanagan?

A light dusting of snow has fallen across the Thompson Okanagan

Many people woke to a light dusting of snow today, Dec. 13, but what we really want to know is if the snow is going to last.

It is too soon to tell if we will have snow on Christmas, says Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa West. The weather patterns for Christmas have only started to take shape.

Christmas is less than two weeks away and West says they are just entering the time period for future projections.

"So far in December there has been an active storm cycle," says West, however, there's been "no precipitation for a while."

There is low-level moisture trapped under the ridge of high pressure which is creating the valley cloud we've seen since Dec. 3, which is expected to remain through the weekend.

Weather patterns are expected to shift on Thursday night through Friday which brings a chance of flurries over the weekend.

"Cooling trends are expected mid next week and there is the possibility of arctic air," West says. "It's too soon to tell, but that is what the broad pattern is hinting at right now."

Environment Canada's models hint at a ridge of high-pressure rebuilding next week.

"Can't tell if it will snow on Christmas but it should be cold," says West.

Environment Canada says they will know more about a white Christmas next week.
