Dramatic, fiery incident in Kelowna was a driver in medical distress: RCMP

Kelowna RCMP say a dramatic incident involving a car that caught fire after a pair of collisions yesterday wasn't an impaired driver as witnesses described, but a man having an medical emergency.

According to an RCMP news release, they received numerous complaints about a suspected impaired driver just after 4 p.m. yesterday, Feb. 10.

The suspect vehicle crashed into a median and a ditch and was driving on the wrong side of Tower Ranch Boulevard. Police said the vehicle caught fire as a result of the crash, but still kept moving.

It was located by officers at a local golf course where it had finally stopped after crashing through a fence gate.

And, while the vehicle was still smoking, RCMP said they tried to clear the driver from the vehicle, but he resisted before being taken into custody.

But police said it became clear the driver was in fact, not impaired, but suffering a medical emergency. First aid was provided and the man was transported to hospital for treatment.

As well, RCMP said the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia was notified of this incident. The office is called to determine if an officer’s actions or inactions lead to substantial injury or death.

The agency has since determined that it will not be investigating, RCMP said.

Police said no charges are being considered at this time.
