Lake Country RCMP are warning the public about a scam targeting businesses and homeowners.
The scammers knock on doors offering homeowners a reduced rate for a service if the property owner gives them a portion of the money up front, and then the fraudsters never complete the job.
The reason this scam is especially problematic is once a contract is agreed upon the crime often becomes a civil issue rather than a criminal one, RCMP said.
The business or homeowner has to take civil action against the fraudster who often presents the offer as a company that doesn’t exist.
RCMP are advising people to be cautious when approached by anyone offering a service or product where they ask for money up front.
Any businesses that offer services door-to-door are legally required to provide a contract for their services or products, and these contracts are regulated by Consumer Protection BC.
