When Buttercup – a yellow Labrador mix – was found running loose in Comox it was suffering from suspicious injuries. The dog is now in the care of the B.C. SPCA.

“Someone had taped her muzzle shut, leaving cuts right across her face,” Alina Wilson of the B.C. SPCA said in a media release issued today, Feb. 16. “Her leg had also been previously broken in two places and had healed incorrectly. Unfortunately, she will require amputation for her full recovery.”

Buttercup is also underweight and requires treatment for a parasitic infection.

“Despite all Buttercup has been through, her personality is as warm and happy as her name,” Wilson said.

As a courageous and resilient dog, Buttercup has been entered into the B.C. SPCA’s annual calendar contest. Anybody can enter their pet, and the animals with the most votes by 10 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 will be featured in the 2024 calendars. There will be 13 winners – one for each month of the year and one for the cover.

“Buttercup perfectly represents the courage and resilience of the thousands of animals rescued by the SPCA each year,” Wilson said. “When you donate to this sweet dog’s contest entry you are bringing care to her and other vulnerable animals. If she receives enough votes Buttercup will win a feature in the 2024 BC SPCA Calendar, representing shelter animals.”

Votes can be cast through this link, and donations can be made through Buttercup’s entry until 9 a.m. on Feb. 18.

“We encourage all animal lovers to make this year’s Calendar Contest our most successful ever, so that we can continue to help as many vulnerable animals as possible.”
