KELOWNA - A tense standoff in Lake Country ended peacefully late June 12, when RCMP took into custody a man they say was in need of assistance and had access to a loaded weapon.

The man, who was in his 60s, was apprehended by tactical members of the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team, with the assistance of a Police Service Dog.

"The suspect was immediately assessed medically at the scene by BC Emergency Health Services and later transported to hospital where he was cleared to be held in custody. He remains in police custody at this time and faces potential charges," said Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey, in a press release.

O'Donaghey said they were at the man's residence for an ongoing criminal investigation, when he locked himself in his house with a loaded firearm that they later found in a search of his property.

The incident took place over the better part of eight hours and RCMP have yet to say why they were called to the man's house.
