Summerland RCMP were able to de-escalate a situation involving a distraught man armed with a knife earlier today.

A man experiencing a mental health crisis after being asked to vacate a commercial property in Summerland was safely apprehended by police around 8:34 a.m. today, Oct.9, in the 15000 block of Logie Road, according to an RCMP media release.

Police were told the 44-year-old man has been staying on the property in his truck and camper but was told this morning he had to leave.

The man became distraught, causing a disturbance and threatening to harm himself with a knife.

Officers cordoned off the area, utilized crisis-intervention and de-escalation tactics in an effort to calm the man.

An RCMP crisis negotiator was also called in for support.

"The specially trained negotiator spoke with the man at length," RCMP spokesperson Sgt.Jason Bayda said in the release.

The man surrendered to police, was safely apprehended under the B.C. Mental Health Act and was taken to hospital for medical assessment and care, police said.
