SALMON ARM - If you want to have the ability to tee off anytime you like, and you've got a spare $4 million lying around, the Salmon Arm Golf course is up for sale.
The club announced on April 29 it will putting the 91-year-old gold club up for sale. A media release put out by the club says it's estimated to go on the market for over $4 million, a sizeable return from the original $100 investment that purchased land in 1925 to build a six-hole course.
The Salmon Arm Golf Club is currently run by the non-profit Salmon Arm Golf Course Society who voted April 25 to put the club on the market. The media release says the club approached the City of Salmon Arm in late 2018 in the hope the City would purchase the club, but the City declined the offer.
The club, which features an 18-hole championship course and a nine hole heritage course, says the golf industry has suffered a decline over the last decade. The economic downturn in 2008, along with the overbuilding of golf courses, ageing demographics and a lack of leisure time have all been factors in the club changing from a membership driven funding model to one of public play.
The golf club says a volunteer-driven non-profit society is no longer sustainable in the current climate.
The new buyer will have to take over the club's debt and its current liabilities sit at roughly $2 million. The release says the club has always managed to meet its debt obligations regularly.
While the sale takes place, the Salmon Arm Golf Club is open for business as usual.
