PENTICTON - It’s decision time at the Okanagan School of Arts Society, as the board deals with financial and building issues at the Shatford Centre.
Okanagan School of the Arts Board President Robin Robertson, issued a media release today, March 11, to advise the public of a special general meeting that will be held March 21 in order to discuss the fate of the School of Arts and the Shatford Centre.
Robertson says significant community engagement and board deliberations resulted in local feedback and a new strategic direction for the board in recent months that could lead to exciting possibilities for the society.
At a regular meeting on Feb. 21, a review of the budget and financial details the School of the Arts determined a short term, and potentially long term, cash flow situation that could ultimately result in dissolution of the society. The board felt more membership feedback was necessary in order to decide whether the society’s line of credit should be used to finance the society’s operations.
Robertson says there are several different options and possible outcomes to consider, and those will be presented at the March 21 meeting along with liabilities that accompany them.
Robertson says the board hopes to receive the support needed to continue its mandate with the society, but added the 98-year-old Shatford Centre has “significant challenges to the building that are making decisions very difficult, including costly renovations and upgrades.”
Robertson says members need to be committed to the future of the society before the board can commit to a new lease, which is up for renewal in June, 2020.
The special general meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on March 21 at the Shatford Centre.
