Boaters on Okanagan Lake are being warned to watch for high winds this afternoon and into the eventing.

With thunderstorms expected to form over the ridge tops in the Central Okanagan today, July 9, Environment Canada is warning those storms could produce strong, gusty winds.

“When these thunderstorms move eastward toward the valley, downdrafts from these storms could produce strong gusty winds up to 70 km/h,” the weather office said in a special weather statement.

“People boating on Okanagan Lake should exercise extra caution.”

The forecast for Kelowna and the Central Okanagan calls for a mix of sun and cloud today with showers late in the afternoon, a risk of thunderstorms this evening and a high of 39 Celsius.

The gusty winds are expected to become light late this evening.
