Salmon Arm RCMP in collaboration with Golden, Revelstoke and Sicamous RCMP arrested a dangerous driver after he crashed into two vehicles, ran one off the highway and fled from the police last week.
On Feb. 8, at 11:05 p.m., a woman reported that a white Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck had struck her vehicle with her family, including two children, in it, according to an RCMP media release.
The pickup had initially been parked on the highway with no lights on when the woman swerved to avoid it.
The driver of the pickup then caught up to them, rear-ended them, and rammed the driver's side of the woman's vehicle.
The pickup then sped off.
No injuries were reported.
Revelstoke RCMP received a report of this and spotted the vehicle shortly after.
Two police vehicles attempted to stop the Dodge pickup when it sped off crossing double solid yellow lines into oncoming traffic. Police deemed it unsafe to pursue.
Revelstoke RCMP later received a report that the same pickup truck rammed into another car and ran it off the road on the Trans-Canada Highway. The driver of that vehicle suffered of a broken bone.
Sicamous RCMP was advised of this driver and its officers quickly located the truck with front-end damage on Highway 1. The pickup got stuck behind a semi truck and was followed to Canoe where the Salmon Arm RCMP had set up a spike belt.
Police first attempted to pull over the pickup again but it fled for a second time at a high speed and into oncoming traffic. The spike belt was then deployed but avoided by the pickup.
Officers then located the pickup at a local gas station and were able to box the truck in with the help of Sicamous officers.
The driver was arrested in a high-risk takedown without incident.
It was determined that the driver may have been suffering from a mental health issue, so he was transported to a local hospital.
"This was a high-risk situation where our officers made tough decisions in considering the safety of the public and attempting to stop this driver," Salmon Arm RCMP Sgt. Simon Scott said in the release.
"This incident shows the great communication and teamwork between our officers at neighbouring detachments in safely locating and stopping this driver before anyone was more seriously injured."
Police will be recommending several charges to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration.
