Curtis Sagmoen back in custody, facing new charges

Curtis Sagmoen leaves the Vernon court house Sept. 9, 2019.

Curtis Sagmoen has been charged with breaching a probation order.

The North Okanagan man with a history of violence against sex workers is now facing three charges for breaching his probation for events that allegedly took place yesterday, April 26.

The charges come on the same day Sagmoen had a charge of assaulting a police officer stayed by Crown prosecutors.

Details of what Sagmoen did to allegedly breach his court order have not yet been made public.

The probation order dates back to December 2019 when Sagmoen was convicted on charges for ambushing and pointing a gun at a sex worker he'd called to his family's large rural North Okanagan property.

Following the conviction, Sagmoen was released from custody having been detained for more than two years awaiting trial and was put on strict 36-month probation.

One of the probation terms was that Sagmoen was not to have any contact with sex workers.

While it's not yet known what conditions of his probation he allegedly broke, police have taken the unusual step on two occasions to publicly caution sex workers to stay away from the Sagmoen family's Salmon River Road property.

Following one of the warnings put out in October 2020, police searched Sagmoen's property and later charged him with assaulting a police officer.

Sagmoen was alleged to have slammed into an officer while he was under arrest and in handcuffs.

However, yesterday, April 26, Crown prosecutors stayed the charge.

A spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service said they had to evaluate whether there was a substantial likelihood of conviction.

Sagmoen has multiple convictions for violence towards sex workers and several months after he was convicted for ambushing a sex worker he was convicted for driving an ATV into another sex worker.

Both incidents took place in the summer of 2017.

Following Sagmoen's arrest for these assaults, the remains of the body of 18-year-old Traci Genereaux was found on the Sagmoen family property.

No one has been charged in relation to her death and police have not disclosed how she died.
