PENTICTON - With the prospect of the Penticton’s clean reliable water supply potentially at risk, city council didn’t waste any time agreeing to provide additional funds for the replacement of some critical water supply infrastructure.
Development Services director Anthony Haddad told council at Tuesday's, Dec. 19, meeting a project to replace two critical reservoir supply water mains on Ridgedale Avenue recently went to tender, with the lowest bid coming in at $350,000 more than the $2,690,894 budget for the project.
The two water mains serve a critical purpose in delivering water to the city’s reservoirs, and have been subject to failures in the past, including one that occurred in 2016, with Haddad noting the pipes were now at the end of their service life.
Staff has reviewed the project to try and find some cost savings, but none could be found.
Haddad also noted the city was seeing big increases in material costs for the large diameter pipe needed and in construction costs, which he said were being impacted by an overall trend of rising construction rates throughout the valley.
Council gave unanimous approval to the budget increase, in addition to awarding the contract to low bidder Cantex-Okanagan Construction Ltd.
