MONTREAL - A preliminary hearing will be held in October in the sexual assault case of a former Montreal borough mayor.

Gilles Deguire is facing charges of sexual assault and the sexual touching of a minor under 16. He was arrested in January but released under promise to appear in court.

Crown prosecutor Louise Blais said two people, including the plaintiff, will testify at the hearing.

The alleged events took place between Dec. 1, 2013 and Oct. 23, 2015, in Montreal and elsewhere in the province. The alleged victim was under 16.

Deguire, who is in his 60s, was still mayor of Montreal North at the time of the alleged incidents. He was arrested shortly after his resignation.

Deguire worked as a police officer in Montreal for 30 years before being elected mayor of Montreal North in 2009 and winning again in 2013.

The hearing will take place Oct. 7.
