Son of deceased Montreal Mob boss Vito Rizzuto to stay in jail until trial

MONTREAL - The son of deceased Montreal crime boss Vito Rizzuto will remain behind bars as he awaits trial on charges that include drug trafficking and gangsterism.

Leonardo Rizzuto, who is in his mid-40s, was arrested in November during Quebec provincial police raids targeting organized crime.

A Quebec court concluded Friday that releasing Rizzuto on bail would undermine public confidence in the justice system and could put citizens at risk.

Members of the Rizzuto family were on hand to hear the result of the weeks-long hearing for Rizzuto and his co-accused, Stefano Sollecito.

Police have previously identified both men as among the heads of Montreal's Italian Mafia.

Vito Rizzuto died from natural causes in December 2013.

Evidence presented during the bail hearing was placed under a publication ban.
