Firefighters quickly put out a blaze that started on a balcony of a Kelowna retirement complex this afternoon.
Crews were called to a fire at the Mission Wood Retirement Resort at 1075 Barnes Ave. near Gordon Drive this afternoon, May 12. A plume of smoke from the blaze could be seen for kilometres.
Those in units affected by the fire are staying at the Coast Capri Hotel if they are unable to stay with family, said Steve Apgar, whose mother-in-law was displaced due to the fire.
The fire, which began on the balcony of a first floor unit on the Gordon Drive side, was quickly extinguished by firefighters, said Scott Cronquist, deputy chief with the Kelowna Fire Department.
The fire also damaged upper units of the complex but no injuries were reported, he said.
Traffic on Gordon Drive is moving slowly as emergency crews are on scene.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
