VERNON - The managers of a resort located near the Dee Lake wildfire say the threat appears to be over after some tense moments yesterday afternoon.

Jan Groshaw, who manages the Dee Lake Wilderness Resort with his wife Michelle, says the fire activity died down this morning, July 17, after B.C. Wildfire crews hit the fire hard yesterday.

“I see zero smoke right now,” Groshaw says.

He adds that forestry informed them this morning that the fire was 100 per cent contained and considered to be a rank 1-2 fire.

B.C. Wildfire has not confirmed the containment to iNFOnews.ca. Its last official update was at 1 p.m. and at that time, B.C. Wildfire said the fire was 70 per cent contained, and an estimated seven hectares in size with no structures threatened.

Groshaw says the resort is operating as usual today with no evacuation alerts in effect.

He and his wife first saw the smoke yesterday afternoon while quadding near Alex Lake. They saw a plume of black smoke in the area of the resort and raced back to find a fire burning about a couple kilometres away.

Groshaw says they phoned 911 and were impressed with the quick response from B.C. Wildfire.

“Boom, they were here,” he says.

The Groshaws watched all evening while water bombers doused the fire and dropped retardant on the flames.

Groshaw says despite some tense moments, he had confidence the fire would be kept under control.

“For my wife though it was too close for comfort,” he says.
