A body was found after Vernon firefighters put out a brush fire in the city this past Saturday.
Police discovered a deceased person in the burned area of a bush fire near the intersection of Highway 97 and 48 Avenue at around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, according to an RCMP media release.
Fire crews successfully contained and extinguished the fire, which is believed to have originated at the site of an encampment on the west side of the roadway.
First responders then located the body and an investigation into the circumstances around the person’s death was conducted. No criminality is suspected.
The BC Coroners Service is conducting an independent investigation to determine how, where, when and by what means the person came to their unexpected death.
"The victim’s details are not being released pending confirmation of identity and the notification of next-of-kin," reads the release.
