The number of people in hospital with a positive COVID test result grew to 987 over the weekend from 946 on Friday.

The number of patients in intensive care units also increased slightly to 141, according to a Ministry of Health news release issued today, Feb. 7.

As many as 65% of people in hospital with a COVID diagnosis were not in there because of COVID but were tested after going to hospital for things like surgery, delivering a baby or being admitted to a mental health unit.

There were 3,287 new positive cases of COVID recorded in B.C. over the weekend including 1,326 from Friday to Saturday, 1,118 from Saturday to Sunday and 843 in the last 24 hours.

The real number is estimated to be three to four times higher because many people infected with COVID are not getting tested or take rapid tests that are not recorded in these figures.

There were 999 new cases recorded in the Interior Health region, 864 in Fraser Health, 440 in Vancouver Coastal, 478 on Vancouver Island and 499 in the Northern Health region.

There have been 32 more COVID deaths in the last 24 hours, including three in Interior Health, bringing the pandemic total to 2,707.
