As forecast by provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, the number of people in hospital with COVID continues to climb.
There are now 854 people in hospital in B.C. who have tested positive for COVID-19, up from 819 yesterday, Jan. 17. Of those, 112 are in intensive care, up from 99 yesterday but down from the record 178 in April.
The tally of those in hospital includes everyone there with a positive COVID test, even though about 45% are not there because they are sick with the disease.
There were 1,975 cases of COVID-19 detected on PCR tests in B.C. in the last 24 hours, with 478 of those being in the Interior Health region. Dr. Henry has estimated the actual number of infected people is three to four times those counts because some infected people do not get tested and others use rapid tests and don’t file the results with health authorities.
Of the new cases, 731 were in the Fraser Health region, 503 in Vancouver Coastal, 175 on Vancouver Island and 88 in the Northern Health region.
There are 37,167 active cases in B.C.
Two more people have died from COVID, both in Fraser Health, bringing the provincial death toll to 2,492.

The count of B.C. residents 12 years and older with at least one dose of a COVID vaccine remains at 92.4% while the rate of those who have two doses climbed slightly to 89.7% and 34.3% have had three doses.
Outbreaks have been declared in four more care homes in the Interior Health region at Village at Smith Creek in Kelowna, Summerland Seniors Village, Westview Place in Penticton and Joseph Creek Care Village in Cranbrook.
