The COVID-19 outbreak at Sandalwood Retirement Resort in Kelowna is now over.

There were 28 cases of COVID-19 linked to the outbreak at Sandalwoods: 26 residents and two staff. Two residents passed away due to their illness.

“Even though we had cases, this outbreak still shows that immunization is working,”  Dr. Albert de Villiers, chief medical health officer said in a press release. “The most important step we can all take is to get vaccinated – this protects all of us and I encourage everyone to register today so that you can be immunized as soon as possible.”

Sandalwood Retirement Resort is an independent living residence operated by Regency Resorts.

B.C. reported 494 new cases of COVID-19 Friday, for a total of 138,304 since the pandemic first began.

There were also two new deaths, bringing the toll to 1,634.

More than 2.39 million doses of vaccine have been administered, of which 124,880 are second doses.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Thursday that any movement to relax current health restrictions on large gatherings and other activities likely won't happen until at least Canada Day.
