PENTICTON - A man accused of drug smuggling near the Osoyoos border crossing now has legal counsel.

Alexis Joel Garcia Palomino appeared by video in Penticton court today, April 27, on several drug related charges including importing controlled substances, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and illegally crossing the border.

Palomino was arrested March 17 near the Osoyoos border crossing, said defence lawyer Robert Maxwell, who was appointed Palomino’s counsel today.

He said Palomino is accused of carrying drugs across the Canada-U.S. border in a knapsack.

Maxwell said he needs to have further discussion with an interpreter as well as receive further disclosure in the matter.

Palomino's next court appearance is scheduled for May 11.
