The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue team was called in to save a woman on the High Rim trail in Lake Country, and her friends needed to be looked after as well.

She started the hike along with two men in Oyama on the afternoon of March 29, according to a COSAR media release, which says conditions were favourable in the beginning.

However the trail deteriorated and the trio found themselves waist-deep in snow. The woman then suffered a medical incident and could not continue.

After calling for help, COSAR sent a helicopter to fly in a medical team and stabilize the woman. She was airlifted away shortly before dusk – taken the Kelowna International Airport and then Kelowna General Hospital, and it was too dark for the helicopter to return for the men.

One COSAR member remained on scene with them, and kept everybody warm by starting a fire and providing warm drinks. Four other COSAR members came on snowmobiles to complete the rescue.

“By 9:45 p.m. the team had dropped off the hikers near Beaver Lake Lodge to a waiting ambulance where they were checked and released to family members,” the release says.

A total of 20 COSAR members responded.

Search Manager Michael Day reminds hikers that it’s the shoulder season, “and while the weather might be great in the valley, snow and wintery conditions still persist in the higher elevations.”
