A structure fire in Monte Creek last night is suspected to have taken the life of one person.

Around 8:30 p.m., June 8, Tk'emlups Rural RCMP were called to a fire on the 1200 block of Hook Road, but the house was fully engulfed in flames by the time police arrived, according to Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn.

One person is believed to have died, but police don't expect criminality to be involved. RCMP are holding the scene for a coroner's investigation.

Pritchard Volunteer Fire Department attended, but they have not yet responded to requests for information about the fire.

The Kamloops Fire Rescue did not respond to the fire because it does not have a mutual aid agreement with the Pritchard Volunteer Fire Department, Platoon Capt. Shawn Davidson said.

The Hook Road area is outside of the Pritchard fire protection area, and the current western-most end of that protection area is Monte Creek Provincial Park, about a 14 kilometre drive from their only fire hall.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District received a report at their April 22 board meeting discussing the feasibility of a second Pritchard Fire Hall at 1215 Hook Rd., near the site of last night's fire.

The report was created for the regional district by Dave Mitchell and Associates Ltd. and scheduled to complete a consultation process later this year, according to the regional district website.
