Cool and rainy finish to the week in the Okanagan, but summer's not done yet

The next few days should see sun, clouds and showers but a high pressure system expected next week could bring a round of summer-like conditions back to the valley.

Rain, and maybe even some thunderstorms are in store for the Okanagan through until Sunday, but a return to summer-like conditions by this time next week is forecast.

The Weather Network meteorologist Tyler Hamilton says there are strong indications a high pressure system will set up shop next week in the Okanagan, bringing potentially record breaking conditions to the city as October approaches.

“We’ve got that upper trough that’s over the province from Thursday until Sunday, with lots of rain and possible thunderstorms throughout southern B.C., but once we head into Monday, temperatures could reach the mid to upper 20s again in southern B.C., up to 10 degrees above normal,” he says.

The forecast for the Okanagan calls for cloudy skies today, Sept. 24, with a 60 per cent chance of showers and the risk of a thunderstorm this afternoon. More showers are expected overnight, with a 70 per cent chance of further precipitation. Winds are expected from the south at 20 km/h gusting to 40, with a high of around 17 Celsius and a low of about 12 C.

More clouds are in the forecast for Friday along with a 70 per cent chance of showers and a high of 16 C. Winds are expected from the south at 20 km/h gusting to 40 in the morning and becoming light in the afternoon. There is also risk of a thunderstorm later in the day. There’s a 40 per cent chance of showers continuing through Friday night with a low down to 9 C.

Saturday looks to be a sun and cloud mix with a high of 17 C. There’s a 60 per cent chance of showers overnight along with a low of 9 C.

Sunday’s forecast sees clouds and a 70 per cent chance of rain with a high of 17 C. Sunday night should see cloudy periods and a low of 15 C.

Monday looks drier with a mix of sun and clouds, a high of 24 C and a low of 8 C.

On Tuesday, expect a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 22 C and a low of 8 C.

Wednesday should see a sun and cloud mix and a high of 22 C.

Normal temperatures for this time of year in the Okanagan are highs of 18 C and lows of 6 C.
